Washington Family Magazine : September 2014
2 6 September 2014 washingtonFAMILY.com If you’re thinking September is the opposite of swim season, think again! Your kids are just getting warmed up after a few months in the pool over the summer. Instead of spending the next nine months on land, keep their swim skills sharp this winter. Just move indoors and let Goldfish Swim Schools give your kids a year-round program to make them stronger, more confident swimmers! Goldfish Swim Schools is coming to Reston, VA, this fall, and Owners Ryan and Gina Bewersdorf and General Manager Ken Turner are excited to introduce DC families to the first swim school of its kind in our region – with completely new facilities, a proprietary curriculum and first-rate instructors! Goldfish Swim School is passionate about teaching kids to swim. They know the Goldfish curriculum will ensure your kids get the best instruction possible – and they’ll have a great time while they’re learning. Goldfish caters to kids and parents alike with their state-of- the-art water purification system, air-conditioned viewing area and activity area for parties and events. Ken has more than ten years of swim instruction experience and has a teaching degree – a perfect combination of skills for running a swim school. Not to mention the Ironman70.3 Triathlon under his belt. He’s an inspiration to those kids with swimming ambition! Swimming is a life skill every child needs to learn. Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death in kids under age five. Teaching kids to swim ranks up there with teaching them to wear helmets and buckle up. “The skills we teach at Goldfish are potentially life-saving safety skills.” Ken advises, “And, like any learned skill, it requires practice to maintain proficiency. Consistency is a crucial component of reaching that level of safety and confidence.” “Summer only” swimming doesn’t provide the consistency Ken recommends. If students take an extended break from swimming, they’ll lose skill and strength. Year-round lessons are most important for “kids who are just beginning to swim on their own and for those who have recently made new accomplishments.” If the idea of winter swim makes you shiver, no worries. Lessons at Goldfish are all about keeping your children safe and comfortable. The water is kept at 90 degrees, and the air temp stays at 92. Any goose bumps will be from the excitement and pride kids get as they learn new swim skills. Just one lesson a week can turn the “don’t get my face wet” set into swimmers ready to jump in next summer. If kids stay “dry” ‘til spring, you may find yourself spending another summer cajoling them off the deck. Lessons at Goldfish are parent friendly – they are “perpetual” which means you don’t have to worry about scheduling and signing up for individual session. Your kids can progress at their level with teachers who follow the same teaching model. Their small class sizes (no more than four kids per instructor ) ensure every child gets the personalized attention he/she needs. Goldfish instructors participate in more than 40 hours of classroom training on the curriculum as well as in-water shadow training. They are all certified in shallow water lifeguarding, CPR, First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Classes run the gamut from introductory parent-tot programs lessons to pro-level lessons. For the advanced swimmers, Goldfish offers a Recreational Swim Team. Add weekend parties and free swim time for the family (to include the community at large – not just enrolled students), and Goldfish becomes a destination for year- round swim fun! Even before the Reston location opens its doors, you can pre-register to be assured of a spot when the water’s ready!
